Achieving Growth

Ellis Newlove is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, and installation.

His practice examines identity as something performed, treating this as a defining condition of contemporary life. Through the objects, images and materials of the everyday, he considers how we project and romanticise versions of ourselves, and how these things acquire emotional and cultural charge in the process.

Rather than exposing as false or superficial, he approaches these performances with affectionate suspicion. The work considers performance as something through which contemporary life is experienced and understood. Humour, vulnerability, aspiration and self-consciousness coexist in this space, as ordinary objects become emotionally and culturally charged through the meanings we invest in them.
